ASTHMA BASICS
What about allergy control products?
Many companies sell products designed to help with trigger control: sprays to kill dust mites, filters for heating ducts and mite-proof encasings for mattresses and pillows. There is some evidence that mite-proof encasings are a good idea, but less evidence that the other products will really make a difference. Also, it may take a combination of measures to make any noticeable difference; for example, a person might need mite proof encasings, weekly hot water laundry, carpet and curtain removal, no more cat, and good cockroach and mold control.
Sometimes people are sensitive to allergens that significantly affect their asthma and their quality of life most or all year round. When a person has persistent asthma that is thought to be due to exposure to a year round allergen, allergy testing and allergy shots may be considered. Allergy shots are a long-term commitment, usually involving weekly or twice-weekly shots for several months, gradually decreasing to monthly shots and typically continuing for 3-5 years. It’s important to remember that having allergy shots does not necessarily replace anti-inflammatory medication.
