Asthma, allergic and airway diseases are clinical problems with a very large number of underlying causes. Advances in our understanding of these causes and in the development of pharmacologic and immunologic therapies have revolutionized the associated morbidity. It is concerning that even in developed countries such as the United States, both the prevalence of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and deaths attributed to them are on the rise. The goals of the Duke Asthma, Allergy and Airway Center include delivery of state-of-the-art clinical care and cutting edge research that will ultimately lessen the burden of these diseases.
