History of the Center
The Duke Asthma, Allergy, and Airways Center is a project of the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics to develop a state-of-the-art clinic for patients with asthma and other lung and allergic problems. The Center brings together specialists in lung disease, and allergy to offer care for adults and children in a caring environment at a site conveniently located in Durham, but still a part of Duke University Medical Center. In addition to comprehensive medical care, it is our goal to educate patients so that they are empowered to control their disease. As part of Duke’s mission to increase medical knowledge, the Center was also planned as a hub of patient-centered asthma and airway research efforts. We want to better understand airway and allergic diseases and to evaluate new therapies. Therefore, we carry out research in these areas to ultimately improve the lives of our patients.
The Center began operations in 2004 at the Center for Living Campus near the main Duke Medical Center Camppus, off Erwin Road. Our permanent site opened in August 2005 at 4309 Medical Park Drive, near Durham Regional Hospital. This new clinic has space for specialists in adult care (Pulmonary Medicine and Allergy in the Department of Medicine) and in pediatric care (Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics). Additionally we will have available Sleep Medicine experts and close ties to ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat), and Speech Pathology Clinics. Full pulmonary function testing and allergy skin testing are also be available on site.
